Former Armstrong Police Chief Enters Alford Plea

A former Armstrong Police Chief charged with misconduct in office has entered an Alford plea to two charges after a jury was selected for his trial in Clay County District Court.

According to online court records, 47 year old Craig Merril entered the Alford plea to two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon-taser.  As part of the plea deal, charges of ongoing criminal conduct, first degree theft and two counts of non-felonious misconduct in office will be dismissed.

Sentencing is set for September 17th, at 10am, in Emmet County District Court.  According to the plea agreement, the defense will request a deferred judgement and the state will not make a sentencing recommendation.

Merrill was one of five Armstrong City officials arrested in February 2021 for misconduct in office.  After several delays, his trial began on Tuesday with jury selection.  The trial was moved to Clay County due to pre-trial publicity.

Three former Armstong City Clerks had previously pleaded guilty in the case.

Former Mayor Greg Buum is scheduled to stand trial on October 1st at 9am, in Clay County District Court.  Buum is facing 11 misdemeanor and felony charges.
