Blue Earth Native Working as a Border Patrol Agent Shot and Killed in Vermont

A Blue Earth native who was working as a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Vermont was shot and killed on duty near the Canadian border on Monday.

The agent was identified as 44 year old David “Chris” Maland on Tuesday by authorities and his family.  Maland was a Blue Earth native, a graduate of Fairmont High School and a U.S. Air Force Veteran who spent the last 15 years working along U.S. borders in Texas and Vermont among other assignments.

He was killed Monday afternoon following a traffic stop, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said in a statement.  A German national in the county on what the FBI called a current visa was killed and an injured suspect was taken into custody and is being treated at a local hospital.
